Service Overview

Acupuncture is one of the oldest and most commonly used Chinese medical treatments of the world. By stimulating specific areas of the skin affecting the physiologic functioning of the body, acupuncture restores the normal flow of energy through the body. In doing so, it helps alleviate pain and treat diseases.

An acupuncture treatment involves the insertion and manipulation of extremely thin needles into the superficial skin, subcutaneous tissue, and muscle of the body at particular acupuncture points, stimulating a healing effect. The disposable needles are sterilised before use, and usually elicit nothing more than a mild tingling sensation when inserted as they are hair-thin.

There are as many as 2,000 acupuncture points on the human body, which are mostly located on 12 main meridians which channel Qi. To attain the desired effect, Qi is rebalanced via methods of ascending, descending, reinforcing, reducing, warming and clearing using the needles.

Benefits of Acupuncture

The efficacy of acupuncture is supported by research. Several physiological mechanisms have been identified to explain the effects of acupuncture.

Acupuncture relays electromagnetic signals in the body at a rate which is greater than normal. Several of these signals stimulate the secretion of pain-alleviating hormones such as endorphins, while others mobilise immune system cells to areas that are injured or vulnerable to diseases.

In addition, the release of opioids from the brain that relieve pain and promote sleep are activated by inserting needles at certain acupuncture points.

In addition, the organ systems are benefitted by the release of neurotransmitters and hormones that is promoted by acupuncture. Some of these chemicals help to regulate basic metabolic functions such as body temperature, blood sugar levels, blood pressure and blood flow. Others help boost the immune system.

How Many Treatments are Needed?

The frequency and number of treatments will vary from one patient to another depending on their health conditions and requirements. Some symptoms may take only one treatment to relieve, while others may take 10 treatments or more. In general, a disorder such as chronic pain requires two to three treatments a week for the first few weeks. The frequency can be slowly reduced to a couple times a month.

Each treatment lasts between 20 to 30 minutes. Cupping and heat stimulation may be paired with the needles in order to increase healing success.
